By speaking to those who knew Simmons, TMZ examines the details behind his disappearance from the public spotlight in the new documentary.

In addition to Somers, the show includes interviews with Leslie Wilshire, longtime costume designer for Simmons, and author Bruce Vilanch.

Simmons currently leads a secluded existence and hasn't made any significant public appearances in recent years.

Harvey Levin, the creator of TMZ, claimed that Simmons does leave his home. "We discovered that he enjoys going to the beach and shopping," added Levin(The Sun).

"In more than eight years, not a single paparazzi has exposed anything of Richard Simmons in public."

Simmons developed an interest in healthy living after relocating to Los Angeles in the 1970s. He shed over 100 pounds, but he soon realized that guys catered to individuals who were already physically fit.

He established The Anatomy Asylum, a fitness center that emphasized healthy food, made exercise enjoyable, and promoted happiness.

Simmons was able to establish his fitness empire and for many years was a mainstay in the industry. He had appeared in several media outlets, including The Howard Stern Show and The Late Show with David Letterman.

In 2016, he performed his final exercise at the asylum, now known as Slimmons, before ostensibly calling it quits.

After multiple inquiries concerning his whereabouts, Simmons said in a statement in 2016 that he just "wanted to be a little bit of a loner for a while."

Simmons sort of came out of retirement during the Covid-19 outbreak by reposting old videos of his exercises on his YouTube site.

At the time, a representative told Fox News, "We have received an overwhelming desire for Richard to return in some capacity as a comfort to all struggling with the pandemic."
