The 68-year-old former basketball player was born to Dunbar and Rita Vanderveer in Melrose, Massachusetts. However, she spent most of her childhood in the small community of West Hill, near Schenectady, New York.

Later, the family moved to Niagara falls in her sophomore year of high school, where her love affair with the basketball started.
