He graduated in 2005 and received a baseball scholarship to Walters State Community College.
However, Froning soon ended his baseball career and worked at his hometown's fire department. He continued his studies at Tennessee Technological University. A professor at Tennessee Tech introduced Froning to CrossFit in 2009, and he soon developed a passion for it.
Froning started doing CrossFit workouts in his barn and began coaching and competing in 2010.
How Much Is Rich Froning's Net Worth?
As of 2022, Crossfit trainer Rich Froning's net worth is approximately $5 million.
Froning has regularly competed at each of the CrossFit Games since 2010. He qualified for the 2010 Southeast Regional competition through the Sectional Qualifiers, a precursor to the online-based Open.
Froning won the Regional and qualified for the fourth CrossFit Games, held at Carson, California's Home Depot Center. At the 2010 Games, his first game, the Crossfit athlete earned five top 5 finishes. These finishes included two event wins.
Froning also never dropped below 13th. He was the leading athlete heading into the final event.
However, the rope climb portion of the games in the final event exposed a weakness in his technique. As Froning did not know how to wrap his legs and feet around the rope, the athlete was forced to attempt the rope climbs only using his arms.
This method left Froning exhausted, and he fell from the rope multiple times.
His 12th-place finish in the final event opened the space necessary for Graham Holmberg to move up to the top spot. The 2010 Games podium had Holmberg first, Froning second, and Chris Spealler third. In the next year, 2011, Froning again suffered as he had a poor start at the Games in the Beach event, which is known for featuring the first ever ocean swim.
However, he performed consistently well in most other events, winning three events, including the event that featured rope-climbing, and placed second in three other events.
Froning topped the leaderboard and had nearly a hundred points more than second place Josh Bridges, Which led to him winning his first CrossFit Games title.
After the 2011 Games, Froning won every stage of the Games seasons from 2012 to 2014. These wins included the worldwide Open, Regionals, and Games, and this winning streak lasted until he retired from Individual Competition.
In the 2012 alone Games, Froning won three events (Chipper, Elizabeth, and Isabel), beating second-place Matt Chan to win again this year.
Froning and Annie Thorisdottir, the winner of the women's competition, made history by being the first athletes to win the CrossFit Games twice.
In 2013, Froning started poorly again in the swimming event and finished in 30th place.
However, the athlete made up for it by performing well in most other events and winning the last three. Froning once again topped the leaderboard, beating Jason Khalipa to win for the third time, becoming the first-ever three-time winner of the Games. He faced a strong challenge from newcomer Mat Fraser at the 2014 Games.
The athlete struggled in the Triple-3 event due to the heat and had to walk part of the run course.
At 37th place, it was Froning's worst-ever finish in a CrossFit Games event.
Still, the athlete finished strongly with three consecutive event wins on the final day to win a fourth consecutive title.
Froning then retired from individual competition after these Games, but in the half-decade that he competed in his four consecutive CrossFit Games, the man set the standard for the "Fittest Man on Earth."
The name came from a documentary released in the summer of 2015 called "Froning." The documentary filmmakers from CrossFit, Inc. coined the phrase when they called Froning the Fittest Man in History.
Since his retirement, Froning has qualified for Regionals as an individual.
However, the athlete has chosen only to participate in the team competition as part of the "Mayhem Freedom" team.
According to Froning, he doesn't necessarily like winning but hates losing more.
In 2015, after retiring from individual competitions, Froning started competing as part of the CrossFit Mayhem/CrossFit Mayhem Freedom team at the Games.
The athlete has been a constant in the team since 2015, although other team members have changed. Froning's team won all the team competitions at the Games from 2015 to 2021, from 2017 when it came second, and in 2020 when no team competition was held.
